The final of the "Women Standing" Award organized on December 10 at the Tanganyika Lake Club by medica mondiale e. V. in Burundi saw the participation of 9 women entrepreneurs from several localities in the country. The initiatives in the running are in the sectors of agri-food, crafts, natural cosmetics, or others.
Medica Mondiale has supported these entrepreneurs for over 6 months by providing training support, personal development, mentoring, and pitch preparation, in order to strengthen their entrepreneurial skills and their economic and social impact.
"When a woman controls her income, she also strengthens her decision-making power, her security, and her dignity. This competition is a celebration, but also an act of courage and commitment from women that falls within the framework of the 16 days of activism against violence towards women and girls," said Joséphine BUDIGOMA, Acting Country Representative of Medica Mondiale in Burundi.
After a presentation session of the finalists' projects, 4 best initiatives were awarded.
Diane AKIMANA from Kayanza won the award for "Best Women-Led Business." This woman entrepreneur who produces eco-friendly charcoal from household waste received a check for 10,000,000 Fbu and one year of support to strengthen her business. "I am so thrilled. It’s a great surprise and a strong message for my commitment," she says.
In 2nd place, Jeanine NTAKARUTIMANA, who makes washable and reusable sanitary pads in Gihanga, won the award for "Best Promising Idea" with a check for 7,000,000 Fbu and participation in a 12-month support program to grow her business.
Gyslaine MANIRAKIZA won 3rd place in the "Inspiring Entrepreneurial Journey" award with a check for 5,000,000 Fbu for her soap production project.
Eudicie UWAMAHORO, who produces sunflower oil, came in 4th place winning the "Jury's Favorite" award with a check for 3,000,000 Fbu. The two entrepreneurs will also participate in the mentoring program established by medica mondiale.
In her speech, Denise NSABUMUKIZA, Director of Judicial Cooperation and the Security of Public and Private Documents at the ministry responsible for gender, praised the ongoing commitment of Medica Mondiale to Burundian women. She concluded by reaffirming the Ministry's continued support for initiatives promoting development, empowerment, and inclusion in Burundi.
